Harriet Tubman Terrace

Honoring Harriet Tubman

Harriet Tubman (c. 1822–1913) was born enslaved in Dorchester County, Maryland. After escaping in 1849, she returned again and again to guide family and friends to freedom along the Underground Railroad. During the Civil War she served as a scout, spy, and nurse, and became the first woman to lead an armed assault in the war — the Combahee River Raid, which freed more than 700 people. In later years she cared for the elderly and poor in Auburn, New York. Harriet teaches us to protect one another and to move forward together.
