Frederick Douglass Drive

Honoring Frederick Douglass

Frederick Douglass (c. 1818–1895) was born enslaved on Maryland’s Eastern Shore. He taught himself to read, escaped to freedom in 1838, and became a world-renowned orator, author, newspaper publisher, and statesman. His autobiographies exposed the brutality of slavery; his newspaper, The North Star, championed abolition and women’s rights. He later served as U.S. Marshal and Minister to Haiti. Douglass reminds us that leadership begins with self-respect and that dignity is never negotiable.
