Charles Drew Court

Honoring Dr. Charles Drew

Dr. Charles R. Drew (1904–1950) was a surgeon and medical researcher born in Washington, D.C. His research on blood plasma storage revolutionized medicine. He directed the "Blood for Britain" program during World War II and became the first medical director of the American Red Cross blood bank — then resigned in protest of the policy of segregating blood by race. He went on to train a generation of Black surgeons at Howard University. Dr. Drew calls us to serve the health of our whole community.
