Honoring Annie Turnbo Malone

Annie Turnbo Malone (1877–1957) was born in Metropolis, Illinois, to formerly enslaved parents. She developed hair-care products for Black women and founded Poro College in St. Louis — a cosmetology school and business hub that employed hundreds and trained thousands of agents. Among the wealthiest Black Americans of her era, she gave generously to Howard University’s College of Medicine, YMCAs, and the St. Louis Colored Orphans’ Home, which now bears her name. Annie teaches us that success is meant to be shared.
